Somers Primary School believes that camps are a valuable experience for all children.
In our Camps program, children participate in a wide variety of activities which develop a range of social and physical skills.
Year 3 and 4 Camps
Children from Year 3 and 4 have an annual camp based on adventure activities at a local venue, such as The Briars in Mt Martha and Somers School Camp. This camp is usually held over three days and has proven to be an excellent introduction to camps for the younger children. Activities conducted include rock climbing, ropes courses, archery, giant swing, orienteering, team games and cooperative activities.
Year 5 and 6 Camps
The Year 5 and 6 classes attend an annual camp, usually held over four or five days. Camps alternate each year between Canberra and the Urban Camp in Melbourne.
This year, the Year 5 and 6 children visited our nation’s capital, Canberra visiting both the old and new Parliament House, The Electrol Commission, Australian Institute of Sport, Questacon, The National Gallery of Australia, Mount Ainslie Lookout and Regatta Point.
Urban camp activities include visits to the MCG, Eureka Tower, a day-long program at the Melbourne Zoo, visits to Old Melbourne Gaol and the Victoria Market. There was also the experience of catching trains and trams and walking around the city. It proved to be a tremendous social and educational experience for every child who attended.
